A Collection of Poems and Proverbs by Robert V. Harms

In the History of mankind, though he risked his life, it was often the court jester who was allowed to speak the truth. The role of the clown or jester has been that of a cunning and sarcastic entertainer who used the guise of a fool because of the freedom it offered. Supposedly the jester wasn't expected to be smart enough to follow the contemporary social graces; his assumed innocence allowed him to speak his mind. This freedom was often used to criticize the rules of society as well as the ruler himself. Thus the jester could put a moral or satirical spin on most anything.
